A recent study in the Journal of Patient Safety found that medical errors may lead to more than 400,000 deaths per year in the U.S. The study concludes that the epidemic of patient harm in hospitals must be taken more seriously if it is to be curtailed. In June, 2016, a Lake County, IL jury held a local surgeon responsible for permanently cutting off circulation to a woman’s lower leg during knee replacement surgery. The jury awarded $1.6 million for her injuries.
